Bonhomme Richard Oil on Canvas 26" x 44" William COULTER 1849 - 1936 William Alexander Coulter was born on March 7, 1849 in Glenariff, Ireland where his father was captain in the Coast Guard. At age thirteen the younger Coulter went to sea and for seven years his apprenticeship allowed him to learn every detail of the ships on which he sailed. He had a natural gift for drawing and color and during his off-duty hours aboard ship he sketched and painted. After arriving in San Francisco in 1869, he worked as a sailmaker while continuing to paint in his leisure, and by 1874 was regularly exhibiting with the San Francisco Art Association. Coulter was for the most part self-taught except for a period of three years in the late 1870s when he studied in Europe with marine artists Vilhelm Melbey, Francois Musin, and Jacob Jacobsen. By 1890 he was living in Sausalito in a house that was just a few feet from the water. He kept a studio in San Francisco at 325 Montgomery Street, which he shared briefly with Hiram Bloomer. In 1896 he joined the staff of the San Francisco Call as their waterfront artist. His pen-and-ink drawings appeared daily in that newspaper until the disaster of 1906. One of his most important commissions was done between 1909-20 when he painted five 16' x 18' mural panels for the Assembly Room of the Merchants Exchange Building. This room was the center of all the trading and maritime business of the day on the West Coast. In 1923 the United States Post Office immortalized one of his paintings with a commemorative 20-cent stamp. He rarely departed from marine subjects and even his occasional landscapes contain a body of water. Unlike his friend Gideon Jacques Denny, he seldom painted ships in distress, but generally showed them in harmony with their surroundings or in their full glory. Captains and shipowners valued his ship portraits for their accuracy of detail. A prolific painter, from 1869 to 1936 he chronicled the shipping industry in San Francisco Bay, capturing the vitality of the square-riggers, hay scows, tug boats, and schooners that sailed in and out of the Golden Gate. Coulter died on March 13, 1936 at his Sausalito home having left a great legacy to California and the maritime industry. In 1943 a Liberty Ship was launched at the Kaiser Shipyard and named S. S. William A. Coulter. Exhibited: California State Fair, 1873-93; Mechanics' Institute (San Francisco), 1874-90; World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago), 1893; Alaska-Yukon Exposition (Seattle), 1909.       <image:caption>Edan Milton Hughes was born June 4, 1935 in Maysville, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky, where his studies were interrupted by the Korean war. After the war, Hughes settled in San Francisco. He was an avid dancer. He found work as a dance instructor and a hair stylist in some of the principal San Francisco hotels. During the period of the 60s and 70s in San Francisco, Edan lived in the Haight-Ashbury section of the city, which was the center of the youthful counterculture of the 1960s spreading across the city and the country. There he rubbed shoulders with Janis Joplin, and other colorful characters of the period. He sometimes worked as an assistant to rock promoter Bill Graham and met many of the main rock groups and personalities of the time, including members of the Rolling Stones, Creedence, Carlos Santana, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and the Mamas and the Papas. He also worked in real estate, which brought him into contact with some of the fine art from the state of California… which started a life-long passion. At the time, there was little interest in such art, and he was able to procure many canvases from some of the best artists, unrecognized at the time, for a pittance. This formed the basis of what became a vast collection of California art. Paintings covered every inch of wall space in Edan's SF apartment. Stacks of paintings were tucked neatly in every nook and hallway.  His interest as a collector, along with an increasing recognition of the value of California art, combined to turn Hughes into an art dealer of California art of the first order. The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento collaborated with Edan, to help organize and publish revised editions of his work. in 1986, Edan published his monumental reference work "Artists in California, 1786-1940" with biographies of over 20,000 California artists. This work, along with Hughes' collection and dealership, helped to draw attention to California art in the art world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Index - William Barr</image:title>
      <image:caption>Distinguished Gentleman oil on canvas, 20" x 26" William Barr was born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 26, 1867. He began his art career as a student at the Glasgow School of Art (1895-98) followed by work at South Kensington (London) and Académie Julian in Paris (1904). He then taught at the Paisley School of Art in Scotland for 10 years. After earning a reputation in his native land, he first visited California in 1912 and after joining the throngs who came to San Francisco for the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, decided to remain. Working from a studio in his home at 311 Lyon Street, he painted romantic and historical interpretations of California including genre scenes, figure studies, and landscapes as well as many portraits of prominent local citizens. Having studied the Old Masters, he carried their spirit into his work. Barr died in San Francisco on February 25, 1933. Exhibited: San Francisco Art Ass'n, 1918-19; Fairmont Hotel, 1930; California State Fair, 1930; City of Paris (San Francisco), 1939 (solo).
